DUNEX Press Release

DUNEX STAKEHOLDER COFFEE HOURS

Three virtual coffee hours in 2021 connected coastal managers with DUNEX researchers to discuss management needs.  Each included opening remarks by a coastal management stakeholder on a different topic, followed by an open, informal conversation to hear from other managers and DUNEX researchers.  There are about 30 research teams from institutions around the country!

The goal of these coffee hours was to introduce researchers to coastal management challenges that may relate to DUNEX.  Some challenges may be immediately addressed by the 2021 work; whereas others may serve to influence the direction of future research and/or the transition of ongoing research into application.

USCRP intends to fund future proposals to transition science to useable tools and products for coastal managers.

Sign up above to join us on the following Fridays at 3pm eastern and share your needs related to:

  • March 12:  Dune Overtopping
    • Opening Stakeholder Perspective: Michael Flynn, NC Coastal Federation
  • April 9: Soundside Erosion
    • Opening Stakeholder Perspective: Beth Smyre, Dewberry
  • May 7: Beach Nourishment
    • Opening Stakeholder Perspective: Ken Willson, Coastal Protection & Engineeri

DUNEX (DUring Nearshore Event eXperiment) Storm research

A collaborative community experiment

DUNEX is a multi-agency, -academic and -stakeholder collaborative community experiment to study nearshore processes during coastal storms. The multi-phase field experiment, taking place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, began with a Fall 2019 pilot study, and is now being followed by the full experiment, with most activities taking place Fall 2021 through Winter 2022. Check out the DUNEX Pilot Story Map to learn more about specific research underway while also viewing selected photos in the  DUNEX Photo Gallery. The DUNEX Fact Sheet also provides more general experiment goals and plans.

Goal

By collaborating and leveraging research efforts from different groups to collect and analyze data from the same region prior to, during, and following coastal storms, DUNEX aims to improve the basic understanding, predictive capabilities, and observational technologies for extreme storm processes and impacts within the coastal environment

Benefits

In addition to advancing the science, DUNEX will foster coastal community collaboration. By improving communication between scientists and the coastal community at large, DUNEX will facilitate the translation of scientific research into its use and application.
